Planning a race in Asia?

Are you like us and getting  teensy bit jealous this week as you see pictures of white sands, blue skies and palms trees filtering through on your social networks?

This week is the Challenge Laguna Phuket Triathlon Festival . Held across two weekends and the week in-between, The Laguna Phuket Triathlon already happened last weekend (1.8K swim – 55K bike – 12K run), as well as a fun run, then an ocean swim this week, the Thanyapura Junior Challenge and then Challenge iron distance race this Sunday, 1st December. Not only are there a few race options for the competitors in the family but the the best bit is the race location!

I have only been once to Phuket but it was the most memorable family holiday we have had to date. The weather, the water, the tropical setting, the people, the food and a few fun activities like an elephant ride really did make it a trip we wouldn’t mind doing again.

In fact, with stories from friends about this race, as well as other Asian races like Ironman Japan, and the announcement of a new Ironman and Ironman 70.3 in Malaysia I am thinking more of us in Australia might be heading north and planning a triathlon holiday in the Asian sun.

Our newest “crew” member, Graham Ross, used to live in Asia. He claims the Phuket triathlon is one of the best events on the planet! To find out why, read his race destination report which not only gives a good overview of the course and his race day experience last year but also some tips on his favourite places to eat and visit. It might also just convince you, like it has us, that next years Phuket triathlon Festival is a must-do. Thailand becomes even more tempting of course, with the very impressive looking resort Thanyapura especially set up for sports enthusiasts!

Of course, there are a number of other options over the next few months heading into 2014 including:

February 22, 2014 – Challenge Philippines

April 13, 2014 – Ironman 70.3 Malaysia

April 19th – Challenge and Half Challenge  Taiwan

June 1st, 2014 – Ironman 70.3 Japan

August 3rd, 2014 – Ironman 70.3 Philippines

September 27th – Ironman Malaysia

TBA – Ironman 70.3 Taiwan

And a bit closer to home we have Ironman and Ironman 70.3 in Cairns on June 8th. An increasingly popular race on the Australian triathlon calendar for many reasons – and one I add to this list as it also offers sun, beaches and a tropical holiday with lots of action adventure activities thrown in!

Racing in Asia can be a Challenge. Holidays in Asia with children can also be a challenge but it also adds a new dimension to your race related holidays and offers the family an experience of a lifetime. Like I recently wrote in my post “Choosing a Race Destination” – variety is a spice of life!

Are you planning a race in Asia soon? Have you already raced in Asia and have amazing race destination stories to tell? Would love to know. Please share them with us.
