Best Big Island resorts to kick back and relax after the Hawaii Ironman

Post-race is when you can finally all relax. So what are your options after the Hawaii Ironman?

Experiencing the Hawaii Ironman is a week-long event culminating in race day. Lots of excitement and memories that will last a lifetime. When all the hype dies down, the body needs to recover. It’s time to kick back and relax with family and friends.

Some people are in and out of the Big Island the minute the race is over – we realise many people have already spent at least a week on the Kona shores already! But if you can, we suggest giving yourself at least a few days to enjoy this beautiful island out of Kona town.

I know it may be tempting to hop on an airplane to another Hawaii island (and they are all beautiful and unique) but if you are limited for time, there are plenty of resorts to fit all budgets just a short car trip from Kailua-Kona.

Here are a few Big Island resorts we suggest you consider We haven’t tried them all so can’t personally recommend each one, but these are well known and offer something for everyone whether traveling solo or with extended family.

LUXURY

FOUR SEASONS RESORT

Hualalai (22 minutes from Kailua-Kona Town & 13 minutes to airport)

This would be the ultimate for me. 5 star luxury! Accommodation seems to be limited with kids. A perfect treat for a romantic escape or special celebration. Looks like the best the Big Island has to offer!

MAUNA LANI BAY

Kohala Coast (37 minutes from Kailua-Kona Town & 27 minutes from airport)

An eco-friendly hotel on a bay with A reef out front which is great for snorkeling.  Seems to offer most water sports, fitness club, spa and kids club. Nice interiors and some large suites on offer. On my list to try next!

MAUNA KEA BEACH HOTEL

Kohala Coast (40 minutes from Kailua-Kona Town & 30 minutes from airport)

We stayed here on our last visit to the Big Island.  It’s on a beautiful white sand beach ( of which there is not many on an island covered by lava). One section of the hotel has recently been upgraded. Our family of four stayed in one room (2 double beds) which was manageable for a short stay and our kids hadn’t hit their teens. You can also book connecting rooms with kids. It wasn’t overly busy which had its plus side but not so many kids around to entertain our kids! Possible not the perfect pick with families but certainly a lovely option if you like to be by a beach and with 5 star service and dining.

GREAT LOCATION AND NOT SO PRICEY

THE WESTIN HAPUNA BEACH RESORT

Kohala Coast (40 minutes from Kailua-Kona Town & 30 minutes from airport)

Just down from the Mauna Kea, also with a nice white beach out front. One of a collection of Marriot Resorts on the Big Island.

THE FAIRMONT ORCHID

Puako (37 minutes from Kailua-Kona Town & 27 minutes from airport)

I have not been to a Fairmont Hotel before but looks pretty nice. Maybe slightly more old-style hotel but all the luxuries. Is on a protected bay and has children’s program. Just around corner from Hilton Waikaloa where you can have a dolphin experience. Nice little village in this area too.

KIDS WILL LOVE AND REASONABLE RATES

HILTON WAIKALOA VILLAGE

Waikloa (35 minutes from Kailua-Kona Town & 28 minutes from airport)

We stayed here when our kids were 4 and 7 and they loved it! Bit like a Disneyland hotel with lots of nooks and crannies and different places to spend your day. So big that it has a train that takes you around the complex. This does mean it feels a bit impersonal. Lots of pools including great fun slides for kids (and adults!).

We loved watching the dolphins and you can have an up-close dolphin experience if you want to pay for it. Downside for us was no beach. The room we had was great as we had to two rooms so kids slept on a pull-out lounge and we still had a bedroom for ourselves. Bit dated and didn’t love the food options on the hotel grounds so best to pop out to the village for some meals.

SOUTH OF KONA

SHERATON KONA

Keauhou Bay  (15 minutes from Kailua-Kona Town & 24 minutes from airport)

Only big resort south of Kailua-Kona town. Also part of the Marriot Suite of hotels. We have not ventured down this way much. No beach but Sheraton does have the swimming with Manta Ray’s experience at its doorstep which is a must-do! Hire a car to tour around if you have the energy. It’s closer to Kailua-Kona than the hotels above and handy for a trip down to the bottom of the island where you can visit the National Park and see the lava flowing into the sea.
